Does a handyman need a licence?
Short answer: this dataset cannot tell you, so check your state page.
What the data shows
Of the 11,739 licences in the file, only a handful mention handyman work or home improvement at all — a few entries in Maryland, and single entries in Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, and Utah. Most of those are home-improvement contractor or salesperson licences, not a licence named "handyman".
That gap does not mean handyman work is unlicensed. It means states have not reported a handyman licence in this dataset. Many states regulate the work itself instead: electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and general contracting often have their own licences, and those can apply no matter what you call yourself.
How to check
- Open your state page and look at the contractor, electrician, plumber, and HVAC groups.
- Search for home improvement to see the records that do exist.
- Look at the construction manager / contractor occupation page.
- Call the board listed on the closest matching licence and ask whether your planned work is covered.
