Aircraft mechanics are certified by the FAA with either an airframe (A) or powerplant (P) rating. Initial ratings require either completion of FAA Approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School or 18 months of work experience. Applicants must pass written, oral and practical exams. Thirty months of work experience is required for a combined Airframe & Powerplant (A & P) certificate. To obtain an inspector's authorization, a mechanic must have held an A & P certificate for at least 3 years. This certificate is valid until it is surrendered, suspended or revoked, but requires currency of experience or refresher training.
