Embalmer Pre-Graduate Trainee Permit Information Those considering entering the embalming profession may apply to the Department for registration as a pre-graduate trainee. The objective of this training period is to familiarize oneself with the profession in order to determine whether to begin or to complete formal education in mortuary science. Up to three months of the one-year apprenticeship training period may be completed as a pre-graduate trainee. The balance of the one-year apprenticeship training period must be served after earning a degree in mortuary science from a program accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFS) and successful completion of the Arts and Sciences examinations administrated by the Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards (CFSEB). Pre-graduate trainees are restricted to performing duties that are not within the scope of practice of embalming.
