To become an interpreter in the State of Alabama, an applicant is required to have certain nationally recognized credentials. Those interested in being Licensed must submit a current Certified Registry for the Deaf (RID) membership card. Those interested in being Permitted must submit proof of passing an RID approved ethics or written knowledge exam and one of several approved performance assessment tests. Individuals who do not qualify for a License or a Permit may apply for a Provisional Permit, which is valid for one year only and within that year those Permit holders must pass approved tests in order to upgrade to a permanent status.
